Design Engineer - Mobile Hydraulic Systems

RFA Engineering ( is seeking a hydraulic system engineer to be part of our engineering team at our customer's facility in Brooklyn Park, MN. The selected candidate will work with our client's experienced engineering staff in the development of off-highway hydraulic systems. The candidate will work both as an individual contributor and as part of a project team.  This opportunity represents a unique opportunity for candidates interested in working in a fast paced, team environment.


Responsible for the complete hydraulic system of asphalt compactors which includes interpreting vehicle program requirements, selecting components, overseeing the design and releasing of drawings, supporting builds, testing the system, trouble shooting/tuning and interpreting test results. The engineer will be working closely with the engine, electrical and machine teams to develop the vehicles.

Typical Day:
1) Collaborate with suppliers and design teams to select the components and develop systems that will meet requirements for performance, cost, reliability, manufacturability and program timelines.

2) Perform analysis/calculations to predict and select concepts. Perform test, collect data and interpret results from tests.

3) Develop and check drawings, B/M & EDN’s per standards.

4) Consult with marketing, product support, or manufacturing teams to help guide design decisions.


  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical or Agricultural Engineering
  • 5 years experience with 3 years minimum of experience in hydraulics design.  Ideal candidate has 9 years experience.
  • Creativity, verbal and written communication skills, analytical and problem solving ability.
  • Team player and detail oriented.
  • Ability to make sketches, engineering drawings and perform analysis/calculations for hydraulic systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, schematics and computer-generated reports.
  • Develop and create hydraulic system schematics, collaborate with suppliers, select components, perform analysis and calculations to provide a system that meets the requirements.
  • Work with Layout/Detail Drafters & other subsystem Technologists/Designers.
  • Direct R & D prototype build & testing of design; analyze/evaluate results & implement design.
  • capable of using test equipment such as pressure transducers, accelerometers, data recorders and have the ability to interpret results from tests
  • Ability to work on numerous tasks concurrently
  • Experience with 3D parametric modeling CAD software.  Experience with CREO 2.0 is a plus
  • Experience with heavy equipment is a plus
  • TeamCenter Engineering PDM software is a plus.
