RFA Engineering ( is seeking several growth oriented entry level to experienced candidates to be part of our engineering team in the Dubuque, Iowa area. You will work directly with our customer to develop control engineering solutions for our clients using state of the art engineering tools.

Automation Controls Engineer 

General expectation for this position will include basic professional controls engineering (e.g. Electrical machine controls design; Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) programming; Personal Computer (PC) programming; Data management) and assignments of specific engineering tasks.  Plans and decisions are made within established guidelines and may be reviewed by supervisors and/or managers. Engineer may assign, coordinate, and review portions of work assigned to support personnel.

Job responsibilities include:

  • Develop and implement factory automation solutions, ensuring compliance to company standards
  • Updating electrical systems and prints for machines and equipment
  • Updating human machine interfaces and PLC programs for machines or shop floor systems
  • Support of conveyance equipment
  • Support of shop floor device connectivity
  • Assist with Manufacturing Execution System (MES) support, configuration, and testing
  • Support integration (installation and networking) of shop floor equipment and tooling into MES and PLCs.
  • Configuration of device and system communications for PLC connectivity
  • Implementation and support of shop floor visualization solutions, such as machine health metric displays and production status dashboards
  • Management of database structures and data records
  • Generate and maintain reports required to support management of equipment
  • Provide daily support for urgent production issues, including root cause analysis and resolution
  • Generate and maintain user manuals, knowledge videos, and on-screen help links


  • Degree in an Engineering/Technology discipline or equivalent experience
  • Experience in one or more related engineering areas: electrical, controls, computers
  • Experience with engineering tools, systems and databases
  • Experience in electrical design and exposure to electrical drafting software 
  • Experience with PLC , PC , and SQL programming 
  • Experience in project management – small strategic projects

Desired Attributes

  • Background in Engineering such as Electrical, Controls, Computer, etc.
  • Knowledge of MES solutions (SAP-MES, AMES, etc.), mistake proofing of manufacturing processes, and shop floor device connectivity
  • Must be a self-starter able to thrive in Factory and office environments
  • Exceptional communication skills
  • Able to adapt between working in team and autonomous situations
